Amish Abstractions

I was fortunate enough to attend the Press Preview for a new exhibition last week.
Amish Abstractions: Quilts from the Collection
of Faith and Stephen Brown
November 14, 2009 — June 6, 2010
at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

This exhibition features 48 glorious quilts made by Amish communities in Pennsylvania and the Midwest dating from the 1880s to the 1940s.. The Amish faith embodies the principles of simplicity, humility, discipline, and community, but their quilts are anything but humble. The rich color palette and bold patterns used are truly beautiful.

Kudos to Faith and Stephen Brown for this wonderful collection. They attended the Preview and gave many interesting comments about their years of collecting these special quilts. This was a definitely an exhibit worth seeing.
